Her parents were hippies that had moved from the United States to Montreal in 1967 due to resisting the Vietnam War. Klein was raised in a passionate and close-knit family that had a long history of activism for peace. She was born on May 8, 1970, in Montreal. She is also a filmmaker and a social activist.
